FEMA FUNDS GRANTED

Livingston County has been awarded Federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program in the amount of $152,637 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The Livingston County United Way serves as the administrator of the local funding.

A local board made up of human service organizations, area churches, law enforcement and community representatives met to determine how the funds would be shared. Chairperson Nancy Rosso, Executive Director of the Livingston County United Way, noted that the Livingston County allocation included an additional payment of ARRA Stimulus funds.  While the total amount allocated for 2010 (without additional ARRA funds) was $152,637,  agencies submitted requests that totaled $275,650 - some noting requests for service up 30-40%.  "With unprecedented numbers of Livingston County families in need of basic services the funding decisions were very difficult," shared Rosso. "It was encouraging to see how agencies are working together to maximize these limited emergency funds."

The committee's charge was to review requests for funding from multiple area human service agencies, focusing on food and shelter needs of the community. The board determined to apportion funding as follows:

Housing:  Salvation Army (rent/mortgage) - $40,000; OLHSA (shelter) - $24,000; LACASA (shelter) - $6,000; and, Livingston Family Center (shelter) - $8,000.  Food:  Salvation Army (summer lunch bunch) - $6,000; Liv. Co. Senior Nutrition (waiting list) - $10,000; OLHSA - $8,000; LACASA - $6,000; Gleaners Food Bank - $29,877; St. Joseph Catholic Church Pantry - $4,000; Family Impact Center - $8,000; Holy Spirit St. Vincent de Paul - $1,380; Hidden Spring Church Pantry - $1,380.

THANK YOU, LIVINGSTON COUNTY!

WOW!  We've been using that word a lot lately.  It's surreal to think about what took place on Monday through the Livingston County United Way's Triple Money Monday.  Triple Money Monday has to be the biggest one-day fundraising event in the history of Livingston County.  We're so proud to be a part of it and proud to be part of a community that cares so much.

Livingston County residents truly stepped up to help in a big way.  Thank you for your trust in our organization and supporting those we serve.

We are grateful for the special donors who made Triple Money Monday a reality.  Thank you to our friends Gwen Haggerty of the Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation, and our two additional donors who wish to remain anonymous.  These three generous people gave our community something to strive for, a challenge to help others in a big way - and we did it working together.

Livingston County United Way is not just the staff or board of directors:  United Way is the volunteers who put in numerous hours to help others in our community, it's the people in our community who 'dig deeply' and care so much, it's the various partner agencies and collaborations leveraging donated dollars to maximize every single dollar donated to $1.89 in value.  The list goes on and on.

Special thank you to all our great media partners for their tremendous coverage.  We also appreciate the Brighton and Howell Chambers of Commerce, county-wide Citizens Banks, Uptown Coffeehouse and Biggby's in Howell for so willingly partnering with us as donation locations.  Thanks to Santa, Olinik Family McDonald's, Spartan Barricading, and Livingston Angels Party Rentals.  You all helped to spread holiday cheer for many.

As promised the contributions from Triple Money Monday will be put towards assisting the homeless, hunger programs, transportation, shelter, utility assistance and area basic need programs.  Thank you, Livingston County!

Scott Menzel, LESA Superintendent, and Dianne Hardy, Livingston County Treasurer - 2009 Campaign Co-Chairpersons; and David Rex, 2009 President, Livingston County United Way
