Women United

WE ARE WOMEN UNITED.

Who We Are

Women United is not like anything you’ve seen before in our county. As an integral part of United Way, Livingston County United Way has formed a brand new Women United chapter!

Joining with over 70,000 other women in 165 U.S. communities and 6 countries to raise money and volunteer about issues we care about!

Other United Ways have membership fees, but we DO NOT. We are not looking to compete with other women’s groups, but want to involve women from all ages and careers in growing local philanthropy and volunteerism. Women United of Livingston County will raise money and volunteer with the overall goal of “Growing Great Kids“.

Our support is articulated in a resolution adopted by our Steering Committee and by the LCUW Board of Directors in that “there is a moral and economic imperative to better prepare our children to succeed in school and life and we recognize that literacy knowledge and skills developed in the pre-school years predict later literacy achievement as well as prepare them to be career ready.”

Women United Reading Trails

The Women United Committee is excited to continue expanding on their mission of “Growing Great Kids” in Livingston County and looks forward to more reading trails in the future! Come join in on the fun!

Permanent Trails

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn and enjoy reading outdoors in local parks in Livingston County! Pages from children’s books are professionally printed and installed on signs along an outdoor path. As viewers walk the Reading Trail they will be guided to participate in physical activities and imaginary play, as well as learn some fun facts as they read each sign!

More About Women United

OUR GOAL: We know that 42% of Livingston County 3rd graders are failing to meet proficiency standards in reading.  This is a staggering statistic!

Our Steering Committee chose as its first issue to address the compelling need of improving children’s literacy. Our partnership with LESA’s Talking is Teaching is not unlike the work of the Hunger Council. When our community recognizes a need, we pull together to find solutions!

We committed to supporting the 29 identified classrooms containing 464 of our children in Livingston County for the 2019-2020 school year. At a known price tag of $2,000 per classroom and an energized volunteer reading brigade we feel confident that we will measure a major increase in 3rd grade literacy 5 years from now!

As of May 2020, Livingston Educational Service Agency ensured every child within the GSRP/Head Start preschool program received a Learning Pack which included the remaining books donated for the year through The Adopt a Classroom Program.
